A Cambridge University researcher, Aleksandr Kogan, built a Facebook app called “This Is Your Digital Life.”

It offered a personality quiz. Roughly 270,000 users installed it, but the app was allowed to collect data from their entire friend networks.

This resulted in unauthorized access to data from 87 million Facebook users.

Aleksandr Kogan was the Co-founder of Cambridge Analytica. Cambridge Analytica used this data to construct detailed psychological profiles of millions of individuals, including:
